In an exclusive interview with viEUws, Portuguese MEP Diogo Feio (EPP) talks to John Rega, Chief Correspondent MLex FS, about the new Payments Package.

Diogo Feio is the rapporteur on an overhaul of the Payment Services Directive, approved by the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee on the 20th of February. “The vote on the new Payment Package is a very important step for European consumers and SMEs, because it opens the market of payments to new providers and creates more solutions for the consumers”, explains MEP Feio. In this interview Feio shares his thoughts on the updated rules on surcharging, in which a retailer charges extra for the use of a particular card or other choice of payment. “These surcharges are limited to the cost of the transaction, they are not the sources of extra revenue, and the states can prohibit them”, says rapporteur Diogo Feio.
