UPDATE: This Citizens' Initiative has passed the threshold of one million signatures a week ago.
With giant steps the first "European Citizen's Initiative" approaches the necessary 1.000.000 signatures in order to be considered from the EU Commission to be implemented into law.
This ECI calls for water and sanitation as a public service.
From just over 600.000 signatures in early January, the counter has passed 830.000 signatures this week (update: Already past 860.000), closing in on the 1.000.000 mark four months before the deadline.
The recent surge could be the reaction to a push towards privatization from the EU Commission which has arrived in mainstream media. In particular it asks bailout-countries like Portugal to apply the privatization of the water section to handle its debt.
This is what the ECI with the title "Water and sanitation are a human right! Water is a public good, not a commodity!" writes about itself:
"Water is a public good, not a commodity. We invite the European Commission to propose legislation implementing the human right to water and sanitation as recognised by the United Nations, and promoting the provision of water and sanitation as essential public services for all. The EU legislation should require governments to ensure and to provide all citizens with sufficient and clean drinking water and sanitation. We urge that:"
- The EU institutions an d Member States be obliged to ensure that all inhabitants enjoy the right to water and sanitation.
- Water supply and management of water resources not be subject to ‘internal market rules’ and that water services are excluded from liberalisation.
- The EU increases its efforts to achieve universal access to water and sanitation."
