Serbia officially applied for European Union membership on 22 December 2009 and the EC recommended making it an official candidate on 12 October 2011.
According to the negotiations framework, on 21 January 2014, the first intergovernamental Conference took place, signaling the formal start of Serbia's accesion negotiations.
The government in Belgrade declared just two months ago that "We would like Serbia to become a member of the European Union as quickly as possible."
Of course, one of the main issues Serbia needs to solve before becoming a full member state, is the Kosovo dispute. Although last year real progress was made during the EU assisted intergovernamental meetings between the two countries, there important steps to be made before an official settlement can be concluded.
