In the 90's and early 2000's, after the iron curtain fell and the cold war ended, America and Eastern Europe shared a deep and meaningful "romantic" relationship. America came with the security of NATO and the ex-communist countries fully supported and took part in America's actions, such as the war in Iraq or Afghanistan.

The latest polls though show that sides have switched, Western Europeans being now much more pro-America and pro-NATO than their neighbors in the East. This may have something to do with the tensions around the planned missile-defense system and, also, the leaks suggesting the existence of secret American bases for terrorists interrogation in Poland Romania and Lithuania.
