Atlas of European Values Survey from 2008 gives a puzzling image on Europe's understanding of democracy

The European Values Study from 2008 draws a puzzling image. Numerous areas in Europe, particularly in the East seem to hold a contradictory understanding of democracy.
In Western and Central Europe the contradiction is almost not apparent in this survey - with the exception of Portugal. The differences in the standard and security of life can raise the question if democracy is really wished for as a system, or if we are rather looking for solutions to particular problems, no matter the system.
