The European countries stated the Crimean referendum is illegitimate as soon it was announced. Still the outcome surpassed any expectations: 96.77% of Crimean voters chose to join the Russian Federation.
While the Russian government enjoys this "triumphal" success, protests to support Ukraine are being held all around the globe. At the same time the European Union and the USA imposed sanctions on Russia and the EU signed the political part of the Association Agreement with Ukraine. Still, Russian authorities claim to be unaffected by the imposed measures and officially included Crimea into the Russian Federation.
The EU has so far reacted diplomatically to the development of the situation in Crimea, but how effective is this tactic?
